Notes - Elizabeth's courtship with John was strenuously objected to by her parents and an elopement was planned and executed. They left Canada* and came into the state of Michigan where they took up a homestead. This was at the time of the Civil War (1861-1865) was on and in order to avoid the draft law he relinquished his homestead. From that time on [John] was engaged as engineer on lake vessels. The last few years before the death of mother (Elizabeth Edwards Jardine) he was running a tug boat towing vessels in and out of the harbor at Milwaukee, WI. (per son Edward)
*Note: Edward's account leads the reader to believe that John and Elizabeth eloped and went directly to Michigan; however, their oldest daughter Agnes was born in Canada (1857). Their daughter Mary Ann was born in Wisconsin in 1859.
