  • Notes
    • Land deed of John Leith for property in Inverness states "as late of the Fermanagh Militia".

PRO online catalogue has a John born in Dernish, Fermanagh served in the Fermanagh Militia, discharged aged 51, 1807-1829. Records kept at Kew, England, #WO97/1102-90.  apparently he was idshcarged because he was " worn out", had a hernia on his life side and suffered chest pains.

According to the Annals of Megantic County he signed the his discharge documents as  John Leith, lists his trade as a weaver and was a corporal for the Fermanagh Militia under the Earls of Enniskillen.

The Fermanagh Militia Colonels were, William Willoughby Cole (1736-1803), 1st Earl of Enniskillen, followed by his son, John Willoughby, 2nd Earl and then by his son, 3rd Earl (1807-1886) who was Colonel 1834-1875.

From PRONI, Dr. Michael Dewar wrote The Scarva Story and in it he describes "The sight of their thin little nags and the wretched dress of their riders, half naked with sabre and pistols hanging from their belts, looked like a horde of tartars." "The Enniskilleners were without uniform for even when they were supplied with them, they preferred to fight in their shirt sleeves."

John was a weaver by profession and he and Jane emigrated between 1829-1835.

1861 Census for District 2, Township of Inverness, Megantic County has

From Paul Vachon's book, Repertory of Births, Marriages and Burials: The Anglo-Protestants of Megantic County he was buried Nov. 11, 1862 and was 83 yrs.  He was listed as a farmer.

      From Georgia Garnsey
There were no names engraved on the Leith monument  and Hannah Leith's grave stood apart from it.
The Leith property is across from St. Stephen's -

On the 1832 map showing properties in Inverness, the Pound property shows up.  John Stewart, whose daughter Isabella Stewart married Robert Leith lived next to the Pounds on Range 8. Another daughter of John Stewart, Jane married James Longmore and they lived across from the Stewart property.  Someone told me that the Longmore home still stood and was now owned by a French family.

Look up Margaret Dempsey, an elderly lady who is related to us through marriage and lives on the main road in the center of town.  Margaret (Nesbitt) was married to John Dempsey whose father James Dempsey was married to Elizabeth Robinson who was Hannah Robinson's niece!  Margaret is a member in good standing of the Inverness Historical Society and keeps many old records in her ancient and non-functioning stove in her front parlor!!!!  Her address is 315 Gosford Rd., Box 86, Inverness, Quebec, GOS 1KO.  Her phone number in the area (minus area codes, etc.) is 453-7744.
