- (Research):Michael Gillis, age 65, of Ada, MN, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at his residence.
Michael King Gillis was born February 25, 1949, the son of Robert and Shirley (Mills) Gillis in Ada. As a child, Mike grew up in Ada until when in 5th grade, he moved with his family to a farm west of Borup, MN. He attended school there, graduating with the class of 1967. After graduation, Mike entered the United States Navy making it his career for the next 20 years. He served three tours in Viet Nam as a Chief Gunnery Petty Officer. First tour Mike served on a gun ship then dog handler for the second two tours. Upon his honorable discharge, Mike became employed with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in the Borup and Felton area for over 20 years. Since his retirement, Mike enjoyed being at home and spending time with his dog, Kodi.
Over the years Mike's favorite pastimes included taking his sno-bear to Lake of the Woods on winter fishing trips, hunting and in recent years, salmon fishing with friends in Wisconsin.
Mike is survived by a brother, Donald (Julie) Gillis of Dent, MN; a niece, Sarah, a nephew, Keith, and a great-niece, Addison.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, Twin Valley. Officiating was Pastor LaVonne Sannes. Pallbearers were Wes Brandt, Dennis Brandt, Ed Neterval, Sarah Flynn, DuWayne Olson and Aaron Olson. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Gillis, Addison Flynn and Harvey Wiger. Military honors were provided by Twin Valley Nesseth-Lien Post #431 of the American Legion and Minnesota National Guard Honor Guard.
Burial was in the Twin Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
