Their honeymoon consisted of a trip to Rutland, Vermont, where William was ordained as a minister and received his first appointment to the Methodist-Episcopal Church at Landgrove, Vermont. [4, 5]

  Winnifred Martha Gillis was the daugher of the  Reverend William McNab Gillis  and  Mary Elizabeth Codville Gillis . She was born 05 Mar 1878 in Landgrove, Vermon. Merton and Winnifred met while Merton was in his early teaching years at Grand Meadow, Minnesota. They married in 1916 at Walnut Grove, Minnesota (where Winnifred's father was pastor of a Methodist-Episcopal Church) and established their home in Glenwood City, Wisconsin. Winnifred was the choir director for the Glenwood City Methodist Church for many years, and also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
