• Notes

  Prior to the battle of Drumbanaher, Robert resided at Tullaree, situated at Glaslough about 1/8 mile from the south end of the village. Tullaree had many public works and factories, in early days having as many as 1,600 inhabitants. In 1641 Major Robertus Oliver Gillis of English birth and residing in the north of Ireland at Tullaree situated at Glassbough married Olive Rebecca McNab daughter of Fred R. McNab a pro-later or tax collector for the Barony of Trugh - a very important man at that time. (These statements were related by Mr. Fred McKen (a grandson of Robertus' son Robert) when he (Mr. Fred mcKen) was 84 years old, to Robert gillis of Tandragee, Ireland, who gave it to Ben Gillis, his cousin, whovisited him in 1910. SEE notes under John William Gillis, prov. in April 2001 by Mrs. Shirley Aabjerg. According to Robert Gillis of Tandragee, Ireland, in 1910 to Benjamin Cole Gillis, "Olive and Fred were the best specimens that he ever had of grafting together. Their offsprings were 3 boys and 1 girl - William, Samuel and Robert - the girl died young. William became a wealthy man by the linen trade. He raised a mill on the Colleen River, Armagh, and made a large fortune. ... Samuel disappeared..." NOTE: some state he was baptised Lee Saint John, in Northumberland,England, on 30 Jul 1681, but that was 64 years before he was born.
