- According to the 1861 census, William and Jane's three oldest children (John, Eliza, and Robert) were all born in Ireland. Robert possibly died in Ireland, but brothers James and Samuel were born in lower Canada so that is not likely.
The vast majority of people who emigrated from Ireland in the 1800s did so during and following the famine years of 1845 to 1847 which is likely what prompted William to join his parents and siblings in Canada.
