Notes - Robert stayed at home, dabbling in linen in a small way. He married Miss McDole, only daughter of Alexander McDole, a damask manufacturer. Robert was the first to reside on the farm after his marriage. The birth order of their four children is unsure and there are some records that indicate this family had 4 sons and 1 daughter.
(per notes by B.C. Gillis in 1910 with his cousin Robert Gillis, son of Andrew Gillis) - SEE notes on this under John William Gillis, prov. by Mrs. Shirley Aabjerg in 2001.
Robert had land in Donagh for "accommodation in grass purposes."
According to a 1943 letter provided by Mrs. Aabjerg (Canada) and Mrs. Harvey (Australia) in 2001, Robert had a farm and several looms as well as linen raisers and "a lot of flax" on his farm. On that farm, Thomas Gillis' father (William John Gillis) learned to weave. William moved from Quebec (City?) to Upper Ireland, Quebec, where he bought 200 acres of land about 6 miles from Thetford Asbestos Mines, and built a log house. He gave that house to his son Robert who sold it to Ben; Ben sold it to Tom and Tom sold it to Charles Canning. William then bought a 100-acre farm which was given to John who sold it to Mr. Franklin.
Church (St. Salvatore) burial records cite this Robert Gillis of Donagh was aged 86 at death, therefore fairly certain to be father of Andrew, therefore born c. 1771. Burial: 30 Nov 1857, St. Salvador's Church Register,Glasslough Parish, Donagh Cty, Monoghan. [5, 7, 16]
